Course Summary: Cultural experiences have a significant impact on the development of the self and identity of a person. Attitudes toward mental illness vary among individuals, families, ethnicities, cultures, and countries. Converging evidence points to the vital role culture plays in determining cognitive and behavioral responses to events. Mental health and mental illness form part of a continuum with a key sign of psychopathology involving disruption in coherent self. This course will explore the concepts of mental health and mental illness in the context of cultural differences in India.
