Welcome to our Departmental Advising page! This page will provide you information about the Psychology Department’s approach to both course registration and post-grad/career advising for our Psychology & Neuroscience majors.
Find Your Advisor
If you have questions about advising or the Psychology and/or Neuroscience curriculums, you should first review the Undergraduate Studies & FAQs pages.
If you still have questions, see below for faculty advisor contact information.
NOTE: Do NOT email multiple people with the same question. Please give your faculty advisor 24-48 business hours to respond to your inquiry before reaching out to someone else. Multiple emails of the same subject matter are an inefficient use of efforts and resources and result in slower processes, overall.
All freshman, first-year students, and transfer students must be advised by an A&S advisor. You can make an appointment with A&S Advising here.
Sophomore, junior, and senior students can contact a departmental faculty advisor according to the first letter(s) of your last name as outlined by the list below:
- Last Names Beginning A – D: Dr. Lisa Beck
- Last Names Beginning E – K: Dr. Jennifer Crowder
- Last Names Beginning L- Re: Dr. Gayle Faught
- Last Names Beginning Ri – Z: Dr. Allison Scrivner
Types of Advising
We broadly divide advising into two different categories: career / post-grad advising & course registration advising. Read below for more details:
Career / Post-Grad Advising
Career / post-grad advising is when you discuss your career options and post-graduate plans with a faculty member. In these appointments, you can talk about where you want to go after graduation and explore opportunities available to you during your undergraduate education to help you move toward those goals. We recommend reaching out to schedule a meeting with a faculty member who has interests related to your own or who you have already begun to develop a working relationship with through courses, research, or service organizations.
Please note: students should NOT reach out to faculty members about course registration or curriculum questions (e.g., dropping/adding a course, changing major/minors, etc.).
Course Registration Advising
Course registration advising is where you get your pin cleared to register for your next semester of courses. Psychology holds drop-in clinics every Fall and Spring for this purpose. The drop-in clinics are scheduled separately for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors (see schedule below for specific dates).
- First-year (formerly known as “freshmen”) Students: You attend advising with the A&S advising staff. See https://as.ua.edu/academics/advising/ for more information.
- Sophomores: Attend the sophomore registration clinic, and we encourage sophomore psychology majors to meet with Dr. Beck or Dr. Faught once during your sophomore year (either in the Fall or Spring) to work on creating a more comprehensive plan for your curriculum.
- Attend sophomore registration clinic
- Schedule meeting with your assigned advisor (see above) once during sophomore year to create comprehensive plan
- Junior & Seniors: Attend the junior/senior registration clinic. You should already have a comprehensive plan developed for future semesters at this point.
Requirements for Course Registration Advising:
- You must come prepared with a list of courses you would like to take in the following semester.
- You must use the “Plans” feature on your DegreeWorks to outline your multi-semester plan.
- If you have questions, consult the Psychology Undergraduate page and the Psychology FAQs page. There are two advising checklists as well as the seminar descriptions (PY 391 & 491) available on the Resources for Undergrads
Virtual Course Registration Clinics
Starting February 26th for seniors & students with priority registration, March 18th for juniors, and March 18th for sophomores, psychology majors can attend course registration advising over Zoom. The virtual rooms are organized by class standing. You must arrive with a list of courses you are interested in taking during the Fall 2024 semester consistent with your own review of your DegreeWorks.
Note: Junior, senior, and sophomore students have different clinic schedules. Please see the calendars below.
