Dr. Tomeny’s research and clinical interests are in intellectual and developmental disabilities, with a particular focus on autism. Broadly, his research explores cross-neurotype interactions and relationships, focusing primarily on the functioning of autistic individuals and their families across the lifespan. More recent/ongoing projects explore long-term care planning for aging families, including the involvement of siblings in this process. Other projects have focused on identifying risk- and protective-factors for non-autistic siblings and caregivers of those with autism and exploring correlates of sibling relationship quality among adult siblings of those with a disability.  Dr. Tomeny and his lab are also interested in better understanding factors related to quality of life for those with autism; ways to improve cross-neurotype interactions (e.g., between peers, with teachers and other professionals); perceptions of autism among various stakeholders (e.g., parents, teachers, peers, the general public); and the unique challenges faced by underserved families.  Dr. Tomeny’s lab also works closely with The University of Alabama ASD Clinic and the UA-ACTS program.
