The University of Alabama Will Establish a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Facility on the UA Campus!

The University of Alabama is planning to establish a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facility on the UA campus. A $7.5M proposal for the purchase of an MRI Scanner was approved by the UA System Board of Trustees Meeting held in February 2020. Funding for the proposal will be shared between the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office for Research and Economic Development. Purchasing a state-of-the-art 3.0 Tesla MRI Machine will provide the right kind of resource for the growing number of neuroimaging faculty and students at UA. 3T MRI is highly advanced and allows for faster, clearer, and more accurate imaging, compared to conventional MRI.

The planned MRI suite will be housed at the University Medical Center (UMC), and will have the space for placing two MRI scanners. The MRI Suite at UA will be managed as a division of the Alabama Life Research Institute (ALRI) in collaboration with the UMC.
