The Dorothy Sue Jordan Pate Endowed Scholarship in Psychology was established in 2017 by a generous gift from her husband of many years, Dr. James L. Pate. Dorothy was born in Talladega, AL in 1933 but grew up in Mobile, AL. She graduated from Murphy High School, where she played saxophone in the marching band. Dorothy became a student at UA in 1951 and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. She met James Pate in a psychology class at UA and married him in 1954. They had two daughters. After a short break in her studies, Dorothy completed her BS degree in 1960. While pursuing her master’s degree in clinical psychology, she worked as an intern at both Partlow State School and Bryce Hospital. After the family moved to Atlanta, Dorothy studied English at Georgia State University.
Throughout her career, Dorothy held several administrative positions, including McGraw Hill Brook Company; the law firm of Long, Aldridge, Hiner, Steven’s, and Summer; and various cable companies.
Dorothy Sue Jordan Pate died in 2012 in Atlanta. She is dearly missed by her family and friends. The Pate scholarship honors her memory and supports academic excellence within the College of Arts and Sciences at the UA. Each year, the Pate scholarship is awarded to a first-year female graduate student who is pursuing a degree in psychology.
