Clinical geropsychology has emerged as a new and growing specialization to meet the needs of the increasing proportion of older adults in our nation and around the world. Our concentration is designed to prepare doctoral students for careers as scientists and scientist-practitioners. Students in this concentration will be mentored and supervised by our core faculty (all licensed clinical geropsychologists) and our affiliated faculty in the clinical health, cognitive, and social psychology concentrations. Practicum training experiences include paid placements at the Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatry center and the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Other training opportunities include local primary health care clinics and volunteer work with Hospice of West Alabama and other palliative care and hospice programs. Additionally, our faculty and students are actively involved in the aging community. Current clinical geropsychology students have formed an interdisciplinary group called The University of Alabama Gerontological Society of America that sponsors events in the senior citizens center (FOCUS), congregate living sites, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Students are strongly encouraged to avail themselves of the interdisciplinary training opportunities available through the Center for Mental Health and Aging (CMHA). These include a seminar series with internationally re-known and local speakers, weekly research meetings, and co-sponsorship of the Student Mentoring Conference. Faculty and students affiliated with CMHA represent eight colleges and schools at UA, including the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Human Environmental Sciences, Nursing, Engineering, Community Health Sciences, the Schools of Social Work and Law, and the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration. In addition to the standard clinical geropsychology curriculum, students may enhance their educational experience by taking courses offered by other specialty areas in clinical and experimental psychology. Crossover training with the clinical health psychology concentration, the cognitive psychology concentration, and the social psychology concentration are especially encouraged.
